Flash Lighting

Use low flash strengths.

Strobe lights should always mimic an expected natural light source.

Positioning flash

Bounce lighting off corners (wall, wall, ceilings etc) never point flash at what you are lighting

Place flash on tops of doors, cabinets etc

Think about reflecting off windows, light walls, furniture, mirrors etc

Think about distance from subject from light source when setting flash power.
Consider the colour of the surface you are bouncing flash off

If no walls to bounce off use umbrella.

Consider light outside windows and patio doors to light a room.

Focal Length

Try to shoot with the longest focal length that gives you the shot that you want, back up and shoot long. Avoids distortion, and floor and ceiling that you don’t want.

Consider shooting rooms through the doorway.

Exposure & Settings

  • ISO 320
  • F7.1 (due to wide aperture DofF not an issue)
  • Shutter? (1/60th ish) considering main light source in room
  • Use autofocus
  • WB 4800K

Shot Process

  • Set camera position
  • Set camera height
  • Estimate settings
  • Shoot with no flash and see what it looks like considering main light source.
  • Place 1 or 2 flashes as required then shoot
  • Adjust positions, powered etc to experiment

Camera Height

Hand hold to look for composition.

Think about amount of floor, ceiling and worksurfaces showing

40 to 50 cm above most dominant surface, beds, work top, futon, dining round table.
